2009

January: The IRISH TIMES published a feature, written by Arminta Wallace, on St Agnes' Violin Project and Orchestra.

February St Agnes' CYO performed at the 2009 Irish Aviation Authority Festival of Youth Orchestras in the National Concert Hall, Dublin, organised by the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras (see www.iayo.ie).

March  Kayleigh Greenhalgh, Anna Lettis,  Ciara Doyle,   Jassjot Pal Kaur,   Kelsie Jones, violin: Melissa Deans,   Chloe Keane,   Kellie O'Neill, viola; and Dara Kellett, cello, gain places at auditions in Dublin Youth Orchestras (see www.dublinyouthorchestras.ie ). St Agnes' CYO were runners-up in the Primary School Orchestras' Competition at the Inter-Schools Music Festival hosted by Wesley College.

May  The Orchestra gave a concert at Castleknock Educate Together National School, Castleknock

June   Two parents ran in the Dublin Women's Mini-Marathon in support of the project.

School Leavers' recital took place. Amanda Carroll,  Kayleigh Greenhalgh   Jade Kenny, violin, Dara Kellett, cello, Claire Hyland, double bass, Aishling Greenhalgh, double bass, all performed. They were joined by past pupils Yasmine Byrne, Amy Leon and Amy Murray.

St Agnes' Orchestra got 95% in the Primary School Orchestra Examination of the Royal Irish Academy of Music. They played "There Stands a Little Man" from Humperdinck's opera, "Hansel and Gretel", and the Finale from the overture of
"Orpheus in the Underworld" by Offenbach, both arranged for string orchestra by Sandra Dackow, and
The Day of the Dolphin, a suite for string orchestra by Edward Huws Jones.

Yasmine Byrne obtained a place at audition to study viola with Elisabeth Csibi at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Kelsey McCabe, cello, passed the RIAM audition, and is waiting for a vacancy. Amanda Carroll obtained a place at audition to study violin with Natasha Walsh at Leinster School of Music.

Side By Side Concert 35 adult musicians joined the Orchestra for a wonderful SIDE BY SIDE concert to conclude the school year. The 80 strong string orchestra performed a programme which included arrangements for string orchestra and a original composition for children's string orchestra called 'The Day of the Dolphin' by Edward Huws Jones.


July  Summer camp took place July 1st-10th, with a special emphasis on chamber music

On October 17th the Orchestra performed at the Famine Memorial opposite The International Financial Services Centre at an event to mark the United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty which is also marked in 110 countries round the world.

October:  On October 10th the Orchestra performed at the Crumlin Mental Health Association's annual concert in St Agnes' Church, Crumlin

On October 11th following a mark of 95% in the June examination of the Royal Irish Academy of Music, the Orchestra performed at auditions for the Dublin Region High Achievers concert.

November: On November 1st the Orchestra performed at the 2009 permanent TSB High Achievers concert in the Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin, organised by the Royal Irish Academy of Music (see www.riam.ie).  

On November 12th the Orchestra visited St Mary's Hospital and Residential School, Baldoyle (St Michael's House) and gave a morning concert for the children in the primary school, with staff members. Mr Tim Maher, Principal, thanks St Agnes CYO at the conclusion of the concert:

November 19th, the presentation of high achiever medals took place in the school with a celebratory concert to mark the occasion, and other important school events.

December Children from 3rd Class accompanied by string players performed at The Sanctuary Christmas Carols, at the invitation of Sister Stanislaus Kennedy, in the Law Society Buildings, Blackhall Place, in a programme presented by Marty Whelan.

Thursday 10th - St Agnes' Community Youth Orchestra played in the National Gallery in the presence of her Excellency President Mary McAleese in the Royal Irish Academy of Music National High Achiever awards. More here

Wednesday 16th: School choir broadcast on Lyric FM of school choir Marty At Midday.Thur 17th Orchestra and Junior Training Ensemble: Christmas Concert  held in St Mary's C of I church, Crumlin Village at 7:30 pm. All proceeds in aid of medical equipment at Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children, Crumlin. Refreshments after the concert in the parochial hall close to St Mary’s Church.

Fri 18th: Caritas - 3rd Class children accompanied by musicians from the Orchestra perform the Christmas story in words and music for patients and staff at Caritas Nursing Home, Blackrock, and at the School for the Blind, Merrion.

Mon 21st Musicians from Rosary College Recorder Ensemble with guitars joined up with St Agnes' CYO 1st violins and strings to perform Christmas carols in aid of Our Lady's Hospice, Harold's Cross, from 4 pm to 5:30 pm at Ashleaf Shopping Centre, Crumlin Cross. Thanks to everyone who came along and to those who generously contributed.
